Marking the first museum exhibition devoted solely to the photographs of Ellsworth Kelly, this beautifully designed volume features each photograph in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art鈥檚 illuminating presentation of this lesser-known aspect of Kelly鈥檚 art. From the late 1940s on, Kelly created an era-defining body of abstract art based on many kinds of visual phenomena he perceived around him. Largely made for himself, Kelly鈥檚 photographs record these discoveries in tightly-composed images of nature and architecture that often reverberate with striking sunlight and shadow.
Similar as they may appear, Kelly did not base his paintings, sculpture and works on paper on his photographs. The camera for Kelly was yet one more artistic tool he used to brilliantly transcribe his lived surroundings into an art that, however abstract, always resonated with his subjective experiences of actual, everyday worlds.
Kelly鈥檚 rich sensory fascination with such worlds, from shadows on a beachside staircase to the curve of a snowy hillside, courses throughout this handsome book. To those familiar with or new to the artist, these photographs offer a vividly direct chance to see Ellsworth Kelly鈥檚 eye and mind at work unlike any other genre in which this groundbreaking artist ever worked.

Born in Newburgh, New York, Ellsworth Kelly (1923鈥2015) served in France in World War II鈥檚 Ghost Army, graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and returned to France from 1948鈥54. Over the next seven decades, back in New York City and then upstate, Kelly produced an uncompromising body of art that set new standards for the possibilities of abstract art in the 20th century. His work has been the subject of numerous retrospectives the world over and is represented in virtually every major national and international museum.

Mother Tongue is a biannual print magazine that interrogates (and celebrates) modern motherhood through inclusive stories about art, sex, pop culture, politics, food and a few things in between.听It鈥檚 not about kids or how to parent them: it鈥檚 about the nuanced lives we are living鈥攁s mothers, and much more.
This issue is full of women sharing, with great conviction, how they see the world (and themselves in it): filmmaker Mary Bronstein makes a horror show of the maternal experience; writer Alexa Wilding asserts her existence amidst illness in the best way she knows how, and our cover star, Erykah Badu is, in her own words 鈥減regnant with possibility.鈥 Caro Claire Burke confronts millennial 鈥渃ringe鈥 and wonders why we鈥檙e so afraid of it; artist Carmen Winant takes us on an all-American road trip (with her mom), and we publish a short fiction piece for the first time, a ghost story, no less, by the young writer Yukti Narang. There鈥檚 also talk of earlobes, an account of fertilization as you never knew it, poetry by Kate Baer and Hala Alyan, an ode to frivolity, and a reexamination of Linda and Paul McCartney鈥檚 supposedly perfect love story鈥攜et another reminder that things are not always as they appear.听

From bestselling Landmarks author Robert Macfarlane and acclaimed artist and author Jackie Morris, a beautiful collection of poems and illustrations to help readers rediscover the magic of the natural world.
In 2007, when a new edition of the Oxford Junior Dictionary -- widely used in schools around the world -- was published, a sharp-eyed reader soon noticed that around forty common words concerning nature had been dropped. Apparently they were no longer being used enough by children to merit their place in the dictionary. The list of these "lost words" included acorn, adder, bluebell, dandelion, fern, heron, kingfisher, newt, otter, and willow. Among the words taking their place were attachment, blog, broadband, bullet-point, cut-and-paste, and voice-mail. The news of these substitutions -- the outdoor and natural being displaced by the indoor and virtual -- became seen by many as a powerful sign of the growing gulf between childhood and the natural world.
Ten years later, Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris set out to make a "spell book" that will conjure back twenty of these lost words, and the beings they name, from acorn to wren. By the magic of word and paint, they sought to summon these words again into the voices, stories, and dreams of children and adults alike, and to celebrate the wonder and importance of everyday nature. The Lost Words is that book -- a work that has already cast its extraordinary spell on hundreds of thousands of people and begun a grass-roots movement to re-wild childhood across Britain, Europe, and North America.

Women Holding Things includes the bright, bold images featured in the booklet as well as an additional sixty-seven new paintings highlighted by thoughtful and intimate anecdotes, recollections, and ruminations. Most are portraits of women, both ordinary and famous, including Virginia Woolf, Sally Hemings, Hortense Cezanne, Gertrude Stein, as well as Kalman鈥檚 family members and other real-life people. These women hold a range of objects, from the mundane鈥攂alloons, a cup, a whisk, a chicken, a hat鈥攖o the abstract鈥攄reams and disappointments, sorrow and regret, joy and love.
Kalman considers the many things that fit physically and metaphorically between women鈥檚 hands: We see a woman hold a book, hold shears, hold children, hold a grudge, hold up, hold her own. In visually telling their stories, Kalman lays bare the essence of women鈥檚 lives鈥攖heir tenacity, courage, vulnerability, hope, and pain. Ultimately, she reveals that many of the things we hold dear鈥攁s well as those that burden or haunt us鈥攔emain constant and connect us from generation to generation.
Here, too, are pictures of a few men holding things, such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Anton Chekhov, as well as objects holding other objects that invite us to ponder their intimate relationships to one another.
Women Holding Things explores the significance of the objects we carry鈥攊n our hands, hearts, and minds鈥攁nd speaks to, and for, all of us. Maira Kalman鈥檚 unique work is a celebration of life, of the act and the art of living, offering an original way of examining and understanding all that is important in our world鈥攁nd ultimately within ourselves.

This lush volume by Justine Kurland reconfigures the history of collage through the work of 44 artists, from Ruth Asawa to Deborah Roberts.
With a sprawling, loose interpretation of collage鈥檚 past and present definitions, curator Justine Kurland presents The Rose: a compendium of 44 contemporary artists working in or around the medium. Choosing collage, Kurland argues, is an inherently political and contradictory method, as it allows artists to reframe and recontextualize all that we know. She asks us to consider collage as an active process: breaking things apart, centering the margins and forging new structures. Sourcing archival materials, family photographs, vernacular imagery, paint, scraps of paper, ceramics, fabrics, film and more, these artists, according to Kurland, harness these materials "as tools for survival, technologies for world-building and a means of radical deprogramming." With full-color plates of work by each artist along with Kurland's writing contextualizing its place in the canon, this book serves as a historic retelling of art history within the context of collage and the artists on the edge of the medium.
Artists include: Ruth Asawa, Vija Celmins, Philo Cohen, Jay DeFeo, Leslie Hewitt, Kiki Kogelnik, Wangechi Mutu, Frida Orupabo, Wendy Red Star, Deborah Roberts, Martha Naranjo Sandoval, Keisha Scarville, Gwen Smith, Pamela Sneed, Lorna Simpson, Hannah Wilke, Francesca Woodman.

From the legendary New York destination for Jewish appetizing, a beautiful and inspiring cookbook that encompasses history, tradition, and absolutely delicious food.
In 1907, a Jewish immigrant named Joel Russ landed in New York City, where he took a pushcart of herring and built a legacy that would pass down through fathers and daughters (and sons and husbands and wives) for more than a hundred years. Four generations later, the ancestral heart of Russ & Daughters continues to bustle on the Lower East Side, with three more locations throughout the city.
Over the course of a century, Russ & Daughters has fed hundreds of thousands of customers, many considering a visit to the original shop on East Houston a family tradition, weekly ritual, or New York experience. Now, for the first time, Russ & Daughters brings its world-famous institution into readers鈥 homes. Its rich history is told through insider anecdotes from the family and characters on both sides of the counter; illuminating guides to its most famed offerings鈥攕moked salmon, sable, sturgeon, herring, and caviar; and more than 100 cherished recipes for favorite foods like latkes, matzo ball soup, babka, and bagels, among many others.

Af Klint鈥檚 exquisitely rendered botanical portfolio reveals a deep spiritual engagement with the flora of her native Sweden. Across the spring and summer seasons of 1919 and 1920, Swedish artist Hilma af Klint engaged in a period of intense observation of nature, venturing into forests and fields and drawing the flowers she found there. The resulting 46 sheets comprise her Nature Studies portfolio, recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In pencil and jewel-toned watercolor, af Klint juxtaposed exquisitely rendered blossoms with enigmatic diagrams: a blooming sunflower is echoed by nested circles; lily of the valley is joined by a colorful checkerboard; catsfoot is set against a pair of mirrored spirals. Together, these two modes鈥攔epresentational and abstract鈥攄emonstrate the artist鈥檚 belief that close observation of nature reveals "what stands behind the flowers": ineffable aspects of the human character.
Published in conjunction with the first public exhibition of this rare portfolio, Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind the Flowers presents the drawings alongside contextualizing artworks and translations of the artist鈥檚 previously unpublished writings. An overview essay by curator Jodi Hauptman explores af Klint鈥檚 portfolio and the circumstances of its creation; texts by Ewa Lajer-Burcharth, Laura Neufeld and Lena Struwe unpack the imagery, materiality and botanical knowledge behind these works.
Hilma af Klint (1862鈥1944) trained at Stockholm鈥檚 Royal Academy of Fine Arts and established herself as a professional artist. In the first decade of the 20th century, she developed a unique abstract vocabulary, some years earlier than her peers. Whether on canvas or on paper, her singular work is informed by her spiritual investigations and, as this project demonstrates, an interest in and attunement to the natural world.

Kinfolk Issue Fifty-Six explores California as both a real place and a mythic ideal. The Golden State has long embodied the art of living well鈥攁n effortless, sun-drenched vision where nature meets glamour and innovation shapes everyday life. But beyond the dreamscape, California remains a powerful engine of culture, wellness and technology: a proving ground for human potential.
This issue traces the state鈥檚 enduring allure. In Silver Lake, we visit record producer Emile Haynie鈥攌nown for his work with Adele and Lana Del Rey鈥攁s he hosts community dinners in his music studio. Further north, we tour the handcrafted Blunk House, home of artist JB Blunk, whose legacy is rooted in California鈥檚 natural landscape and back-to-the-land ideals. Food writer Rebekah Peppler shares a seasonal menu shaped by local ease and ingredients, while 103-year-old Betty Reid Soskin reflects on a century of Californian history through her own remarkable life.
