Women Holding Things includes the bright, bold images featured in the booklet as well as an additional sixty-seven new paintings highlighted by thoughtful and intimate anecdotes, recollections, and ruminations. Most are portraits of women, both ordinary and famous, including Virginia Woolf, Sally Hemings, Hortense Cezanne, Gertrude Stein, as well as Kalman鈥檚 family members and other real-life people. These women hold a range of objects, from the mundane鈥攂alloons, a cup, a whisk, a chicken, a hat鈥攖o the abstract鈥攄reams and disappointments, sorrow and regret, joy and love.
Kalman considers the many things that fit physically and metaphorically between women鈥檚 hands: We see a woman hold a book, hold shears, hold children, hold a grudge, hold up, hold her own. In visually telling their stories, Kalman lays bare the essence of women鈥檚 lives鈥攖heir tenacity, courage, vulnerability, hope, and pain. Ultimately, she reveals that many of the things we hold dear鈥攁s well as those that burden or haunt us鈥攔emain constant and connect us from generation to generation.
Here, too, are pictures of a few men holding things, such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Anton Chekhov, as well as objects holding other objects that invite us to ponder their intimate relationships to one another.
Women Holding Things explores the significance of the objects we carry鈥攊n our hands, hearts, and minds鈥攁nd speaks to, and for, all of us. Maira Kalman鈥檚 unique work is a celebration of life, of the act and the art of living, offering an original way of examining and understanding all that is important in our world鈥攁nd ultimately within ourselves.

This lush volume by Justine Kurland reconfigures the history of collage through the work of 44 artists, from Ruth Asawa to Deborah Roberts.
With a sprawling, loose interpretation of collage鈥檚 past and present definitions, curator Justine Kurland presents The Rose: a compendium of 44 contemporary artists working in or around the medium. Choosing collage, Kurland argues, is an inherently political and contradictory method, as it allows artists to reframe and recontextualize all that we know. She asks us to consider collage as an active process: breaking things apart, centering the margins and forging new structures. Sourcing archival materials, family photographs, vernacular imagery, paint, scraps of paper, ceramics, fabrics, film and more, these artists, according to Kurland, harness these materials "as tools for survival, technologies for world-building and a means of radical deprogramming." With full-color plates of work by each artist along with Kurland's writing contextualizing its place in the canon, this book serves as a historic retelling of art history within the context of collage and the artists on the edge of the medium.
Artists include: Ruth Asawa, Vija Celmins, Philo Cohen, Jay DeFeo, Leslie Hewitt, Kiki Kogelnik, Wangechi Mutu, Frida Orupabo, Wendy Red Star, Deborah Roberts, Martha Naranjo Sandoval, Keisha Scarville, Gwen Smith, Pamela Sneed, Lorna Simpson, Hannah Wilke, Francesca Woodman.

Af Klint鈥檚 exquisitely rendered botanical portfolio reveals a deep spiritual engagement with the flora of her native Sweden. Across the spring and summer seasons of 1919 and 1920, Swedish artist Hilma af Klint engaged in a period of intense observation of nature, venturing into forests and fields and drawing the flowers she found there. The resulting 46 sheets comprise her Nature Studies portfolio, recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In pencil and jewel-toned watercolor, af Klint juxtaposed exquisitely rendered blossoms with enigmatic diagrams: a blooming sunflower is echoed by nested circles; lily of the valley is joined by a colorful checkerboard; catsfoot is set against a pair of mirrored spirals. Together, these two modes鈥攔epresentational and abstract鈥攄emonstrate the artist鈥檚 belief that close observation of nature reveals "what stands behind the flowers": ineffable aspects of the human character.
Published in conjunction with the first public exhibition of this rare portfolio, Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind the Flowers presents the drawings alongside contextualizing artworks and translations of the artist鈥檚 previously unpublished writings. An overview essay by curator Jodi Hauptman explores af Klint鈥檚 portfolio and the circumstances of its creation; texts by Ewa Lajer-Burcharth, Laura Neufeld and Lena Struwe unpack the imagery, materiality and botanical knowledge behind these works.
Hilma af Klint (1862鈥1944) trained at Stockholm鈥檚 Royal Academy of Fine Arts and established herself as a professional artist. In the first decade of the 20th century, she developed a unique abstract vocabulary, some years earlier than her peers. Whether on canvas or on paper, her singular work is informed by her spiritual investigations and, as this project demonstrates, an interest in and attunement to the natural world.

Whatever you think about religion, it continues to shape our cultures, communities and cities. This issue of Kinfolk takes a look at just some of the ways in which faith undergirds society and touches people鈥檚 lives.
Over the course of several months, we documented the construction of a new Lutheran church in Denmark. Mindful of the building鈥檚 longevity, the local parish asked some of the nation鈥檚 biggest architects and designers to rethink how Christianity might be carried into the future.听
Elsewhere, Christianity鈥檚 history comes under scrutiny鈥攚e speak to Ekemini Uwan, the public theologian holding the Christian church accountable for its complicity in racial violence over the centuries. We also meet two Jewish duos from opposite sides of the Atlantic: the Kleins, creators of the kosher food and travel magazine听Fleishigs, and Sara Moon and Samson Hart, founders of Miknaf Ha鈥檃retz, a community focused on Jewish land justice.听

Unlike most flower-arrangement books, which rely on expensive and often nonseasonal flowers from florists, this book presents an alternative that is in line with the 鈥渂ack to nature鈥 movement. This is the first volume to showcase how to be inspired by nature鈥檚 seasonal bounty and bring that nature into the home through floral arrangements.
From the well-known lifestyle photographer Ngoc Minh Ngo and Nicolette Owen of Brooklyn鈥檚 Little Flower School, Bringing Nature Home presents a portfolio of unique and original floral arrangements directly inspired by the seasons and the local environment, with sources ranging from farmers鈥 market offerings to the backyard garden. Presented through lush photography that also showcases the beautiful interiors the arrangements are created for, this is as much a decorating tome as it is a floral-arrangement guide.听
A how-to section offers advice on the selection, trimming, and care of the arrangements and on repurposed and unique containers, making this book practical as well as inspiring.

At its heart, the Japanese art of ikebana is about celebrating an intimate connection with nature. To practice ikebana is to find inspiration in the seasons, favor unassuming blooms and branches, seek balance and simplicity, and remain fully present in the moment. It is a beautiful, pure antidote to our age of distraction and excess.
Honoring the lineage of ikebana while making the art their own, Amanda Luu and Ivanka Matsuba of Studio Mondine show us new ways to tell stories with flowers. They offer step-by-step instructions for dozens of stunning, seasonal arrangements, while in the process introducing readers to the themes and stylistic signatures of the art. In Studio Mondine's hands, this centuries-old practice feels undeniably fresh--and readers are given the gift of learning to create unique, meaningful, and authentic arrangements.

Tracing her family's story from her grandfather's birth in Belarus and emigration to Tel Aviv--where she was born--Maira considers her unique family history, illuminating the complex relationship between recollection, regret, happiness, and heritage. The vibrant original art accompanying these autobiographical pieces are mostly still lifes and interiors which serve as counterpoints to her powerful words. In addition to vignettes exploring her Israeli and Jewish roots, Kalman includes short stories about other great artists, writers, and composers, including Leo Tolstoy, Franz Kafka, Gustav Mahler, and Robert Schumann.
Through these narratives, Kalman uses her signature wit and tenderness to reveal how family history plays an influential role in all of our work, lives, and perspectives. A feat of visual storytelling and vulnerability, Still Life with Remorse explores the profound hidden in the quotidian, and illuminates the powerful universal truths in our most personal family stories.

In a bountiful book combining art and chemistry, a celebrated ink maker invites kids to become color wizards--by foraging and transforming natural materials to make their own paint and artistic creations.
In this book you will find secret recipes, magic formulas, and wild experiments that will delight your friends, intimidate your enemies, and turn you into a color wizard.
What colors might await in a leafy forest, a berry-stained back alley, a seaweedy beach, or even the dark corners of an ordinary fridge? With this book as a guide, curious young wizards can make natural confetti, unlock the hidden color power inside a leaf, and craft a paintbrush wand. They'll brew magic potions from beets and acorn caps to produce their own colors, from the darkest black to the palest pink to invisible ink, then share their discoveries with friends, family, and the whole color-hungry human race. With whimsy and infectious enthusiasm, master ink maker Jason Logan explains the science of color while presenting "quests," recipes, and hands-on activities using materials kids can find in their own homes and neighborhoods. Featuring both photographs and the author's own gorgeous homemade-ink illustrations, How to Be a Color Wizard is an ideal blend of art and science--plus a little bit of magic.
